INDIGENOUS CULTURAL AWARENESS WORKSHOP

This two-day workshop introduces a basic knowledge of the world views, spiritual and cultural values of Indigenous peoples, highlights historical and contemporary issues that influence Indigenous peoples, and honours the rich diversities within Indigenous communities.

As a result of attending this workshop participants will:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of Indigenous cultures in a health care setting
  • Increase ability to provide culturally competent and proficient care
  • Gain knowledge to build a culturally respectful workplace

The Indigenous Cultural Awareness Workshop is open to all staff and affiliates employed within the Winnipeg Health Region.  Management support is required and it is necessary to attend the two days consecutively.

INDIGENOUS RETENTION for MANAGERS (formerly Honouring All Cultures in the Workplace)

A half day workshop designed in collaboration with Manitoba Blue Cross’s EAP Program, community stakeholders, and Indigenous Health Programs – Health Education to provide information to support diversity in the workplace with an emphasis on an Indigenous representative workforce. This workshop will enhance a participant’s understanding of the dynamics of Indigenous employment and explore how workplace culture may affect the retention of Indigenous staff.  Although IRM is intended to build upon the foundations of Indigenous Cultures Awareness Workshop (ICAW), ICAW is not a pre-requisite. The workshop explores themes and issues emerging from participant experiences to identify concrete and productive solutions, which may lead to:

  • Improved retention for Indigenous employees
  • Create a workplace environment that values an individual’s diversity

Please inquire about group booking options and the delivery of workshops for departments or groups of 8 or more.

PALLIATIVE CARE: INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVE ON END OF LIFE

This workshop will explore Indigenous perspectives on death and dying. As death is a natural part of life, it is also a significant part of our journey. We will explore traditional beliefs and values that may impact on how we, in western medicine, provide care. Both palliative care and the Medicine Wheel provide a holistic approach which includes the physical, motional, mental and spiritual needs of the individual, family members and community. This approach aligns with all cultural beliefs and values, yet at the same time respects individual perspective and needs.

Together we can learn how to enhance levels of communication so as to gain a deeper level of understanding of Indigenous patients and their families. We want to ensure that all patients are able to receive care that meets the needs and expectations of their given situation.

Indigenous Health Policy Workshop

This workshop is designed to provide decision makers within the organization the tools to effectively make change, understand the obligation and accountability of management and board members to make a difference for all staff members of WRHA and affiliates.

Participants who enroll in this workshop will experience the following:

  • Increase understanding of health policy and how it has an impact on Indigenous patients and families
  • Raise awareness of Indigenous historical issues that have contributed to today’s inequalities for Indigenous people within “systems” and institutional and social racism.

Participants may include but not be limited to WRHA board members, all levels of management and Indigenous Health Human Resources to the board (AHHR).
