Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attacks the lungs, however TB can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain.

TB disease is frequently missed and clinicians need to maintain a high index of suspicion for individuals presenting with symptoms consistent with TB disease who have an epidemiological risk factor for prior exposure.

In Manitoba, individuals who have TB disease are treated by specialists and supported by Public Health. Public Health also conducts contact investigations.
